I went to the gun range tonight with a couple coworkers.

I don’t like guns. They make me nervous. But I don’t like being the pansy part of my generation that’s scared of guns either, so I went.

We fired my army buddy’s 40 caliber something or other. If you don’t know guns, just know it has a hell of a kick and each shot sounds like an M80 just went off in your face.

I thought I wouldn’t even hit the target, but it turns out I’m a natural. I smoked this fool. Probably because I was picturing him holding Lady Liberty hostage. I did that for you, United States.

Anyway… still scary, but I’m glad I tried it. It really set the mood for Independence Day.

Sidenote: If you go, I’d advise you not bring a camera. That’s kind of like asking to pay double right when you walk in. Not cool.

We watched this documentary the other night, and it was fantastic.

It’s the story of San Fransisco’s first openly gay man elected to political office, the community he was a part of, and his assassination.

This was just 30 years ago but it seems like a different world. Gays weren’t allowed to teach. They lost their jobs if they came out of the closet. For crying out loud, the killer (who also murdered the mayor that day) only went to prison for five years!

I think we’re really good at blocking out things like this because we’re ashamed of what happened. Or we want to pretend that we’ve come so far. But I don’t know if that’s the case. It was powerfully thought-provoking in that way. And watching it really renewed my appreciation for the history that we’re making in California right now.

I recommend you see it.
