Resolutions for 2009

I know a guy who teaches history at a local high school. He’s about my age, and he’s working on his second book. He’s had articles published in several major magazines, he’s learning a foreign language and he takes piano lessons.

I don’t normally go for the whole resolutions thing, but I’m doing it this year.

And I’m putting them here so I feel a little more accountable. They may not make sense to you. That doesn’t matter. This is for me.

  • Bring camera everywhere
  • Read one book per month
  • Learn how to tie a tie four different ways and use each one
  • Get something published on McSweeney’s
  • Travel to at least four different places
  • Simple daily exercises (pushups, situps… hey, it worked for Bo Jackson)
  • Eat something that scares me (ex: haggis)
  • Consciously look for ways to help other people
  • Gain 50 new Ryler Society members
  • Write one short story every month
  • Take one weekend photo road-trip
  • Learn how to make twelve new meals
  • Earn $500 with camera
  • Respond to emails faster
  • Set aside one day each month for total solitude
