Teleportation

Last night while I was lying in bed, I started thinking about teleportation… wondering if I could imagine it hard enough that it would actually happen. This isn’t unusual for me. I’ve always believed that I was capable of this. Just like I’ve always believed that I could breath under water if I absolutely had to.

Anyway, I wanted to envision a place that I could remember well, and for some reason my mind went to a hostel where I once stayed in Rome. Good enough, I thought. I started to focus on that room… the paint-chipped walls, the dusty wood floor, my suitcase below the bed, the sound that the starchy sheets made when I rolled onto my side, the tiny bit of light coming in below the door. I thought about everything around me.

Suddenly I could hear someone snoring on the other side of the room. I’m awake, I thought. This is for real. No, it’s probably Ashley. I opened my eyes slowly. But Ashley wasn’t there! The snoring was coming from what looked like a young Japanese kid on the bottom bunk of the bed next to me!

I did it!

I kicked my feet in giddy excitement. I teleported! I freaking teleported! I wanted to wake everyone up for hugs and high fives. No, I thought. Just take this in for a moment. I smiled real big and took a deep breath. I thought about Ashley at home, in bed alone. I wondered if she felt my body poof out of sight. I pictured her waking up, searching frantically for me… in the hallway, checking the bathroom, looking under the bed. Probably worried that I was sleepwalking somewhere.

And then suddenly I wasn’t in the hostel bed anymore. I was at home again. Standing in my underwear in the hallway. What are you doing? Ashley asked. I paused for a second - wondering if she’d believe me. Sleepwalking, I said. And calmly went back to bed.

I still haven’t brought it up, but she’ll know soon enough. Tonight I’m leaving for Ireland and I don’t plan on coming home without a few pints of Guinness in me.
