Blockbuster broke my heart yesterday with a price...
And not because of the $2 subscription jump, but because of the sneaky email they sent forewarning their customers about it. It was like, “happy holidays, we have so many movies, ho ho ho, by the way, we’re charging you more now, merry christmas!” It had as much integrity as a high school break up note. Anyway, I wrote them back to express my disappointment and I just got a...

In all of our technological advancements, we still...
Do you ever think about that? We, as an entire race, are only a single step away from wiping with leaves… that’s as far as we’ve come in the last 2.5 million years. All this time and we’ve only managed to make things softer. How is everyone okay with that?

DJ: Alright, this is gonna be the final song of the night. I know somebody out there knows the entire dance. C'mon!
ME: Seriously... who really knows the entire Thriller dance?
DJ: THERE SHE IS!!
ME: Oh dear God... my wife knows the entire Thriller dance.

“Advertising is a tax you pay for unremarkable thinking.”
– From The Year in Advertising - Spotted on rickyv’s tumblr I think that’s old advertising. “When you ride alone, you ride with Hitler” kind of stuff. Part of the mentality that you can talk/guilt anyone into anything. New advertising is rooted in branding. It’s...

Old Hobbies
I bought a pack of basketball cards at the store tonight. Why? I have no idea. I guess it was a weak moment of nostalgia — I was crazy about them when I was kid. But I just opened the pack, and despite recognizing maybe 3 names, I’m totally giddy right now. The smell alone is awesome. I can’t even explain it. And maybe I shouldn’t try. It’s weird. I know it’s...

That quote comes from the only Lyle Lovett song I know. Lyrically, it’s one of my all-time favorites. There’s just something about a pony on a boat that I find so poetic. It’s like getting everything you’ve ever wished for.

I had an epiphany at 4 am this morning and incoherently wrote down the following phrase (which I was sure was genius at the time): Autonomy is autonomical. I woke up later like “what the hell does that mean?” So I looked it up. The words are essentially the same, but one could translate it to: Freedom is self-directed. Which I think is an incredibly wise and powerful statement....

We joined the YMCA two days ago and I made my first trip today. Right now I’m remembering why my relationship with exercise is so fickle — itching and aching and exhaustion for thirty minutes, then an hour later I’m practically Lance Armstrong. What I really enjoy (in addition to feeling healthy instead of lethargic) is the opprotunity to think. There’s no talking and no...

Super Weird
I was just walking to my car and for no reason started to sing Gordon Lightfoot’s song, If You Could Read My Mind. I don’t know where it came it from because I know for a fact that I haven’t heard it recently, but I sang the first two lines: If you could read my mind love, what a tale my thoughts would tell and then stopped because that’s really all I could remember. Then I...

This is a pretty exciting week - for a couple reasons. One of the big ones: I’m going to find out if I get to go to a bowl game. I doubt my chances a little bit - just because I got to go last year, but we’ll see. I’ll keep you posted.

Wine Fund
We keep a change jar here at home as a wine fund, so at the end of each month all of our leftover change buys one bottle of wine. Sometimes it’s a $5 bottle, sometimes it’s a $30 bottle. I just added up the change from November - $10.94. We’re not living a life of luxury here.
